I am also having this problem.
I have Ubuntu Oneiric, I had kubuntu-desktop 4.7 installed, then did the
following
* sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
* sudo apt-get update
* sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
After download, it started to install, but got the same error as
Yep, same problem for me, Ubuntu 11.10 AMD64, Driver version 280.13.
This makes the system unusable. Every thing lags on the screen.

I can confirm this same problem with Dell xps-1530, intel 4965agn, and
clean install of Karmic. However, I can also confirm the exact same
problem in Mandriva free 2010 and in Fedora 12 (just tried it tonight).
This definitely seems to be an upstream problem. WICD on Karmic seemed
to fix the
BTW, all these tests were on x64 platform.
