Fixed! I found the solution!
In the counting loop, there was a "break" where should have been a
"continue" (line 112)
Here is my modified version. Sorry, it's not a diff file (I overwrote
the original already..) but a complete file.

notifier icon, the tooltip says (all the time, even after a reboot and
"apt-get update" too) that there is 1
