thunderbird saves opened attachments to /tmp with permissions according
to umask setting. This was fixed a long time ago with a protected folder
/tmp/mozilla_${USER}0 and was still working correctly as of version
78.14.0+build1-0ubuntu0.20.04.2. The recent update to
1:91.5.0+b
Yesterdays new mainline Kernel v5.4.59 works for me.

5.5.19 looks good for me. I have home over nfs4+krb5p, so the original bug
triggers immediately after login and the DE locks up.
The problem mentioned in comment #31 is not really reproducible, I only
encountered it on the first few boots on Monday, the patched 5.4.0-40 has been
stable yesterday

When I apply that patch to 5.4.0-40-generic the original bug disappears,
however I sometimes still get:
