I think it's not really useful to solve the problem but I tried to use
Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1 cd under VMWare. The live cd starts
flawlessly... maybe it's really a kernel problem? Gutsy has the new
kernel 2.6.22-6.13 (2.6.22-rc3-based)...

I confirm the bug on an Asus A6ja Centrino Duo with Ati Mobility Radeon X1600.
I've tried both modifing the xorg.conf and a sudo dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xorg, but they didn't work for me.
Also the first workaround gives a crash, telling "Caught signal 11. Server
aborting".

I'm sorry, I can't. I tried a lot of times but it looks like I'm not
able to reproduce the crash. It's really difficult to do that because
the crash happened just after finishing a match.
