less bad though, because in spite of the absurdly huge letters when I
typed in my name in the login screen input field, in the end it was
possible to boot into a normal X.

Same problem here! With the installation of the daily build of October
15, with the Alternate CD of Gutsy.
During the second half of the installation, the screen becomes completely
unreadable.

By the way: the intel driver is better than the i810,
How is this possible? Intel video cards are best for Linux, aren't they?
Because all the drivers made by Intel, are open source and part of the
Linux kernel?

This is what it says after compiz --replace:

Apparently it misses something called Xgl. Strange, because Compiz did
function fine at first.

I had the same problem. It's a nasty bug: it also affects general system
performance. For example: Firefox started much slower.
The suggested solution, using mvoncken's list, solved the problem. I
hope this bug will be fixed in Gutsy.

It appears that this problem only happens when the installation is done
with the LiveCD. Installation with the Alternate CD does install
xresprobe automatically.
However, since most installations are being done with the LiveCD, this
is a serious matter.

standard installation. After I installed xresprobe from the Ubuntu
