well, it managed to rip 16 episodes of a tv show without freezing, so i
guess it doesn't have the bug...but then again, i dunno how accurate
this is, since its custom compiled and i dunno if ubuntu has their own
patches that they apply and stuff.

I managed to compile a custom kernel using the latest stable branch from
kernel.org (which is 3.6.31), and i just used ubuntu's config file and
skipped all the new features, so i shall do my stress tests and see if
it hangs overnight.

I believe ubuntu uses the ath5k module by default, since ath_pci is
restricted cause of its closed HAL interface or something
And, i am using arch linux with ath5k as well and there are no crashes,
so i would think that is not the cause. But i shall try that new ubuntu
kernel tommrow at the latest

well, this is good news (i guess), i managed to crash it again (using a
precompiled binary of handbrake, seeding a torrent, and running a little
program called glxdragon, kinda like glxgears) all night. Same
symptopms:
nothing responds, no mouse, no keyboard, anything
no hard drive activity
no fla
well, i managed to install karmic (yikes what a nightmare, the live cd
is terrible! It kept auto mounting drives the second i would unmount
them when i was trying to resize a partition to make room for
karmic...)
anyway, it seems that ffmpeg can't compile under this release of ubuntu
(i read t
well, good news, i got it to reproduce, i set it to rip some dvds
overnight and it didn't even last 2 hours before it froze again.

Yeah, i just ran the live cd all over night while ripping some dvds and
its still alive and kicking, so it might just only be with an installed

went to arch linux, and i have had no freezes whatsoever since i

i personally think having the title bar makes the window look better.
and having the timer is good, because since we no longer have giant
icons to click like in hardy, but rather a quite small menu where it is
easy to misclick, having the timer has already saved me from shutting
down when i wanted

Suspending and resuming on this laptop has always been a problem, but
before (intrepid and arch linux) it at least worked, but my wireless
would stop working. Now it just sits there at a blank screen when i try
to resume

i just installed jaunty alpha 6. and i tried to edit a file (in this
case, /etc/acpi/*.d/90-hdparm.sh) from the terminal using the command:
sudo gedit /etc/acpi/*.d/90-hdparm.sh
and when it opened, it had 4 tabs of the same file opened.

Im actually not running ubuntu at the moment, rather arch (on the laptop
that i had this problem on originally)i tried recreating the error
message but its not coming up, im not sure if its been fixed or its just
a different kernelsince intrepid doesn't even work on this laptop

This is also happening to me in arch linux, but once i reinstall jaunty
(im waiting for a bug to be fixed that caused ubiquity to crash on
install) i will confirm it there

starts up fineso i guess this bug is 'fixed' already.

I am not sure if you guys have already but you should post your laptop
model and make, since apparently you guys are experiencing a different
bug then whats being discussed here, or its different but similar in
nature.

I can confirm that this bug is now fixed for my Compaq F764NR laptop. I
just downloaded the jaunty daily live cd (for 1/31/09) and it booted
from the cd without me pressing or doing anything special (like kernel
parameters)

for this to get fixed in intrepid we need to find out what exactly got
applied to the .28 kernel that fixed this issue, so they can just apply
that patch to the intrepid kernel. I have no idea how to do this, does
anyone here know?
