This problem will be solved. But suspend/hibernate with desktop effects
enabled is still not working for me

Thanks for your suggestion. But to go back to 8.10, I should remove 9.04
completely, which is not the solution I am looking for. Is there an
easier way to downgrade? Like how we upgrade to new distributions using
update manager! That is one thing I can give a try.
