It's a bit confusing because libvdpau defaults to the NVIDIA driver,
regardless of the GPU vendor or lack thereof. But either way, there are

VLC can use VDPAU not only for hardware decoding, but also scaling and

I have no problem playing that example video with VDPAU here. If you are
using the Mesa VDPAU driver, please not that it is buggy... If you are
sure that this is a VLC bug, please provide the VDPAU trace, e.g.
running:

I think that is the expected behaviour of apt-get... you should request
to install libavcodec54 if you want to rpelace libavcodec-extra-54 with
it. Then again, I do not really see the point in doing so.
