I fixed this case by re-installing the 64bit version of libqtcore4.
Using aptitude I did this:
aptitude re-install libqtcore4
aptitude install libqtcore4:i386
(aptitude install skype)
I was trying to install
I confirm this bug. I have the same performance problem compared with
previous ubuntu releases. This is visible all the time but more
specifically under high memory (yet not swapping) or cpu load. I would
say this is more related to the libvte package as the Guake drop-down
terminal shows the same

I am the one who post this bug and my sound card is fully working with
ubuntu 8.10 and kernel 2.6.27 although I don't own a 5.1 speaker system
so I can only test with stereo sound.

For me it's working too.
With Ubuntu 8.10 64bits and kernel 2.6.27-4-generic.
For me only the version 2.6.24 has never worked but any other versions
work just fine.

I finally find a solution to my problem. I tried the latest stable kernel
2.6.25.7 and it works.
So I suppose there is a regression in the 2.6.24 series hopefully the bug has
been fix since the 2.6.25.
For me it's okay because I can use my custom kernel but for new users

I update to hardy 8.04 final with both kernels -generic and -rt and I
have the same message in dmesg

I have compile the kernel 2.6.23 from kernel.org and the sound works fine.
