I believe it is a bit premature to mark this as invalid, due to an
external (non ubuntu) website telling 17.04 has reached end-of life.
Even though the bug report might have surfaced in 17.04, there has not
been any information mentioning it is fixed in more recent ubuntu (or
update-manager) versi

Public bug reported:
This system uses a btrfs filesystem in combination with snapper.
Via the file ``/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/80snapper`` (default file from
repositories) it is configured to take pre-post snapshots upon
performing any apt driven changes.
When using the update-manager i noticed 2 pre-
Had to dug up my old monitor to check.
The system is capable of booting to the login screen.
Hence the issue seems to be fixed in: Xenial 4.4.0-45.66 kernel

The system only has an APU, no discrete card.

16.04 -> AMD APU via VGA gives
Dear Joseph,
In response to your questions:
The issue started after an upgrade from 15.10 to 16.04.
The prior version of the kernel without the problem was the one from 15.10

I will try to test as soon as possible.
Some additional observations regarding this bug.

Public bug reported:
After upgrade to 16.04, the system will only show a blank screen when a monitor
is connected to the VGA output.
The system itself is able to completely start-up (checked via a ssh login).
Starting up using an older kernel (in this case 4.2.0) gives a

Did you change any of the "preferred applications" via the menu (or via
the cli-command "gnome-default-applications-properties").
If so this might be a duplicate of:

Hence I suspect it might be an issue with the "preferred applications"

Hi Johannes,
The bug description hints that you're having a problem with the graphical
front-end (gfceu), which might be a duplicate of bug #424858.
I posted 2 workarounds in that bug description. If these work you might
consider changing the package this report refers to into "gfceu" or even in
The same problem here after an upgrade to Karmic (amd64).
I did some testing and came up with the following two workarounds:
1)Start the game emulation from the terminal using the "fceu" command.
2) Disable Pulseaudio before starting "gfceu".
The 1st workaround bypasses the graphical front-end (
I used to have the same kind of problem on a Jaunty 64 bit OS (random
freezes , due to Xorg 100% load).
The following steps seem to fix it
Run: "nvidia-settings"
disable "Sync to Vblank" under " X server Xvideo Settings"
Perhaps this works for you too.
