Just updated from 9.04 to 9.10 without problem then from 9.10 to 10.04
and had the same error.
I tried this fix (update the etc fstab file from the livecd, on the mounted the
disk) but it didnt work for me.
I still get this error.
Any other advice ?

I have the problem, too. I have not found a workaround. I am running
10.04 on an AMD64 processor. It seems I'll have to drop back a version.

fixed that error with this command:
sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a
I still have some errors and still debugging the upgrade, but the
previous "Malformed..." error isnt appearing anymore more..so far.
