Confirmed that renaming /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-software-
service.desktop worked around this issue for me (nvidia GeForce GTX 640)
with no noticeable consequences.
As a side note, I also experienced a similar issue after installing
16.04, 16.04.1 and 15.10 with same tasksel selections on this

I communicated my unhappiness on this issue to Intel via the
i...@linux.intel.com address offered on the intellinuxwireless.org page.
Perhaps others should do so too (politely, I suggest), focusing on damage
to the Intel brand, loss of revenues to WiMAX services, etc.

The -6000 is different from the -6050. I even tried renaming the
-6000-4.ucode file to -6050 to see if it would work, and got an error like
microcode loading failed. So we still need Intel to produce -6050
firmware (aka microcode).

(Inspiron 6000 Dell) I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.22+ last night and the
soft-shutdown (through menu) works with no spinning sound anymore (and
the button shutdown still does). However, the system make a loud
spinning sound right after I remove my Buffalo external USB drive (even
after I unmounted
Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 here. Just want to confirm that it makes that
clicking + long spinning noise at menu-shutdown in Dell Inspiron 6000,
too.
