Confirmed that renaming /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-software- service.desktop worked around this issue for me (nvidia GeForce GTX 640) with no noticeable consequences. As a side note, I also experienced a similar issue after installing 16.04, 16.04.1 and 15.10 with same tasksel selections on this
