Hi Martin.
My problem,as described, was resolved in version 9.04. Have you tried
changing the name of your connection? (from auto eth0 to Wired Connection 1,
if wired). This was my solution in Intrepid. I have not checked the version
9.10.

"connect automatically" checked.
"system settings" checked.
