Hi Martin.
My problem,as described, was resolved in version 9.04. Have you tried
changing the name of your connection? (from auto eth0 to Wired Connection 1,
if wired). This was my solution in Intrepid. I have not checked the version
9.10.

modem).
System->Preferences->Network Configuration->Wired tab->edit (Auto eth0):
"connect automatically" checked.
"system settings" checked.
Next step: ipv4 Settings tab-->added IP: 10.1.1.4, mask: 255.0.0.0,
