Thank you Daniel. I am indeed using the nvidia driver.
That's the first thing I checked but I can´t find nouveau in the list of
drivers:
lsmod | grep nouveau
Also the output from lspci is the following:

After the black screen, the ubuntu desktop is mirrored instead of extended.
There is no way to restore the extended mode, other than detaching and

Currently I have two monitors attached, they are currently mirroring the same
screen and have the screen is currently larger than the monitor size (when I
move the mouse the screen scrolls).

to the default configuration which leads to (let's assume) the mirror
configuration.
If this is correct, why the configuration in the display at this point still

Please note that this configuration worked correctly before upgrading Ubuntu
23.10 to Ubuntu 24.04.
For some reason Ubuntu 24 removed the NVidia proprietary driver version 545,
therefore I had to downgrade it to version 535.
Apart from this, there are no other changes.

I have other VMs on the same host/KVM exhibiting the same behavior.
I did not tweak anything, so they are on their defaults. This should make it
easier to repro the issue.
One of these Ubuntu VMs have a GPU remapped with IOMMU and it happens
very often that the 'Ubuntu' login ends up i
ok I rebooted and could log in with 'Ubuntu' again.
I then retried to logout and picking 'Ubuntu on Xorg' and I don´t see the
message anymore, but I get the "X" cross and get straight back to the login
screen with my name.
I finally reverted again on 'Ubuntu' and logged in.
I am not sure what yo
I did it: when I log in with the 'Ubuntu on Xorg' radio button selected,
I proceed in logging in and get back the following message: "Display
output is not active".
The problem now is that I cannot get the shell anymore, even if I select
'Ubuntu' back.
I can only login on the terminal using Ctl-A
I am not anymore sure whether I am using xorg or not. Could you provide
me a link to understand that please? (sorry for the basic question)

In the screenshot you can see vs code and the terminal.
VScode cannot be resized, but the terminal can. I don´t see border differences.

The cups-browsed service always use a very high amount of CPU (200%).
This happens on multiple Virtual Machine hosted by Ubuntu on KVM.
I could reproduce the issue on both Intel and AMD x64 cpu architecture.
The VMs had Ubuntu 23.10 and now are on Ubuntu 24 fully updated, but
@James Understood, but the symptoms are the same, including the printer
disappearing from the network (turned off).
Should I find a similar problem or open a new one, the symptoms would be
exactly the same. Not sure if a duplicate issue would help.

@James I am seeing the cups-browsed using 100% CPU on Ubuntu 23.10 fully updated
Initially the cups-browsed was running as a snap service, then I disabled it.
After this, Ubuntu installed a systemctl service that gets re-enabled after
every reboot even if I disable it.
I repeat: the bug is not so
This should not be marked as fixed.
I'm on Ubuntu23.10 (desktop) with several desktop VMs (same OS) and even those
that were just installed exhibit the issue with the CPU usate on cups-browsed
on snap.
When I try to stop using those, it does not work and I have to reboot:
