Today I was able to look at the software on the computer at the copy-and-print
shop where I had printed my tax returns in April.
Foxit works correctly.
Adobe Reader incorrectly shows some form fields blank, as I was able to
reproduce with non-confidential data.

"not possible" - In my experience with a handful of machines, upgrade to
16.04 was possible on all but one, but not smooth on any (as far as I
remember). On the machine which encountered this specific error, it
took some searching on the error message, then running the plausible
relevant commands

Good to see that it is fixed in Ubuntu-16.04-LTS.
Unfortunately, when I had tried to upgrade to 16.04, the kernel did not work
with my i915 video card (I can search to see if there is any updated info about
that).
For bug of High importance, would have liked to see a fix for 14.04 as it is
LTS.
Okular is not an adequate workaround - after Save or Print, likewise the
fields are blue on black.
Acroread from partner repository is minimally functional, but does not
allow saving partially-filled form, does not integrate with CUPS enough
to offer the CUPS-PDF printer as a printer choice [note

FWIW this is the same workstation as in [618775], in which ticket dmesg
showed filesystem errors (which i dont see the same on this one
[617612], but fwiw). We reinstalled ubuntu-lucid after [617612] and
before [618775]. We will check if the hard drive has hardware problems.

@Pepe - in the meantime, our dimension 2350 has gone from spare/test
station to production workstation (30 days uptime, as of today, in
hardy), so sorry, at this time we are unable to do tests on the D2350
that would require downtime (no, an in-place upgrade to karmic is not an
option for us). I a
Dell Dimension 2350 tower.
Followed the automatic bug report tool - this is identified as potential
duplicate ticket - i really do not know whether it is same or different root
