I believe this is normal behavior for LVM. LVM has to build an overlay
layer from all of the blocks contained in the snapshot so they are
available via access to the "parent" LV at any time.
The larger the snapshot, the longer it takes to read in all of the
blocks and build the overlay layer.

I was attempting to track this down for RHEL5 (see here[1]). When I
apply the patch generated by this commit[2], I can no longer reproduce
the winbind segfault.
This is against RHEL5's 3.3.8 and, I would assume, would be appropriate
for Ubuntu's 3.3.x version as well.

Just to clarify, you've tried the 3.3.x patches in Samba bug 6793[1] and
they do not resolve the issue? Also am trying to track this problem
down.
