For me the endless dowloading was fixed by unchecking "Keep messages for
this account on the computer" under Synchronization & Storage in the
Account settings for the affected email account. See

11.04 fails to boot from USB
The only solutions in there that I think applies to this case is to use
(1) Ubuntu's own startup disk creator program and (2) to plug the USB
stick into an USB 2.0 slot instead of an USB 3.0 slot. As for (1), that

In gnome-power-preferences I've se the screen to not dim when on battery
power and I've also unchecked dim while inactive still the screen is
dimmed to the lowest possible setting when on battery power or while
inactive.
I'm using a HP Compaq 6710b laptop.

It's still a problem however, as said, its a bug that seems to happen
irregularly so it's hard to reproduce at command. Also I think a
screenshot won't be of much help. What it looks like is the tomboy
window bugging is showing up in gnome's window list but when clicked it
won't open, it just blink
I changed from 1280x960 to 1024x768 the screen went blank and I waited
out the change resolution timer to change it back to 1280x960, it tried
to but the screen remained blank except for an artifact which appeared
to the left under the center of my screen. So I CTRL+ALT+F2 to a
terminal and capture
I'm using Ubuntu Feisty Fawn (with feisty-backports repository if that
matters).
