I have a machine with Ubuntu 10.04 on it. I happened to have already
downloaded a copy of 10.10 for another purpose, so I added the CD to the
available software sources, and tried to upgrade.

Upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 to try out the new beta stuff. Went to a
video-playing website, and the video played fine, but there was no
audio. Checked and there was no audio in other applications either.

This was on bootup after upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy. System had just
started up, so I assume it was doing its background-query for new
packages.

Interesting. Could it be that when there is not an image to associate
with a file, that it does not display the name properly?

apt-get trick, but when I go into add/remove I still can't uncheck the
box - it just takes no action at all.

Appears to happen with every search. The quotes were just there for
illustration. I tried other search terms, they appear to have the same
problem.
Set the debug, but does not appear to have had an effect.

The Xine plugins will not install on a newly-installed AMD64 system -
but an AMD64 system upgraded from Feisty still has them installed, and
they work fine.

is no longer under Applications->System Tools. It does not appear to be
anywhere else in the applications menu either.
