I haven't followed through this whole thread in detail, but fwiw I had a
problem in firefox 3.0.8 on Ubuntu 8.10 on an XO (OLPC) laptop not
saving bookmarks across restart (history and other prefs were fine), and
I solved it with the details here:

One further clarification, this was with firefox 3.0.8. not beta.

I was experiencing the same problem. Ubuntu 8.10 on an XO (OLPC)
laptop. I had reported it here:

I tried gregory's suggestion. The short answer is that
