My bug is duplicate #700909. The method proposed in #10 worked for me.
I realize the original problem was caused by opening a folder containing
video by choosing "Open with other Application", "Movie Player" and leaving
the default "Remember this application for 'folder' files" checkbox check

My suspicion is this is some kind of file association to the folder type. I'm
not sure where to look to fix this.
It will play a movie type file if one is available otherwise it will give an
error that no plug-in type was found.

Without doing anything except letting my computer go go to the
"Molecule" screen saver and lockup, then hard restart, I was able to see
the Molecule screen saver and change it to something else.
If you are still having this problem maybe try this by letting the
machine activate the screen saver it

I can confirm this one also. I'm running a Dell Dimension 4100 1Ghz,
with an ATI Rage 128 Pro video card, Feisty 7.04.
System completely locks up required hard boot. If I go back into
screensaver it locks up again because "Molecule" is selected.

This does seem related to the 6.10 distro and/or firefox version that is
included. I have upgraded to 7.04(Feisty) and do not have the crash
problem now, although I still can't get Quicktime files to play in the
browser.
