I had exactly the same issue on a Lenovo T440p. When booting from CD or
USB add the kernel parameter acpi=off.

If I do multi touch on the touch screen a few times, x crashes and
things go back to the login screen. Interestingly, this is happening on
Ubuntu with Unity and with Mint.

Just to update:
Fresh install Ubuntu 11.10, then: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get
dist-upgrade
Now I have the same problems with grid, so its not just in
proposed/backports anymore... :/

Just noting that I have the same problems.
Ubuntu 11.04 - i386, Asus R1F
Primary Screen via VGA1, Secondary onboard Intel card.
If Grid (Ctrl+Alt+ [NumPad]) that would totally make my life... Its the

This breaks U1 for everyone at our university. We're behind an
authenticating squid proxy... For a program that ships with Ubuntu by
