Further info: I disabled the screensaver for about four weeks and the
bug didn't occur in that time. I turned the screensaver back on and the
bug occurred the day after. It looks as though the bug is something to
do with the screensaver.

The fault appeared again. I ssh'd into the box and stopped the X server
(sudo service gdm stop). This killed the X server but still the monitor
stayed off. I guess this implies it's a kernel bug.

1. A few seconds elapses between opening the Key Management window and getting
the error message. During this time mozilla-thunderbird-bin uses 100% CPU.
2. If I create a new user account on the same machine, it all works OK.

graphics. The crudely patched usplash-theme-ubuntu.c posted by cdenley

Couldn't see CD-ROM because Intel DG965WH motherboard uses Marvell PATA,
which 2.6.19-7-generic x86_64 doesn't support.
Support for Marvell PATA was added to upstream linux kernel in 2.6.19.

In dapper I used /dev/raw1394, but with the group set to 'video' in
/etc/udev/rules.d/40-40-permissions.rules . (I don't use firewire for
anything else.)
After a dist-upgrade to edgy, kino's capture no longer worked. (Oddly,
dvgrab did.) Changing the device used by kino (Edit -> Preferences ->
IEE
I changed xres=1600 and yres=1200 in /etc/usplash.conf to 800 and 600
respectively, then did sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash (not sure if this
actually required), and it fixed the problem.
The vga=0x315 was something I did long before dist-upgrading to Edgy.
