Answered my own question. Lucid uses Plymouth to display the splash
screen. So maybe this is a bug in Plymouth.

this system. Lucid dies at the splash screen. I notice Lucid does not
even install usplash. What package is Lucid suppose to use to display

I found a non H55 chipset system that fails like this. It uses an Intel
G41 chipset with a Wolfdale processor (Biostar G41-M7 v.6.2 and an
E3300). Do I need to down load the log files?

Installed a Radeon 4550 graphics card. System boots correctly when using
this GPU in place of the Clarkdale IGP. In my humble opinion this looks
like it might be a problem with the xserver-xorg-video-intel graphics
driver.

When Gutsy boots up it turns off the D945GCLF LAN port (the link beat
led goes off). This cpu/mb works fine with Windows XP. Had similar bug
with another 945 chipset mb which I worked around by enabling Wake on
LAN in the bios (see bug #130305). That did not work here. I tried
