Would that upstream kernel also have ext3 boot support back in? I filed
a bug yesterday about that, though have seen no one move that bug from
it's initial reported state.
With this same kernel I see the ext3 boot partition not recognized.
If testing the upstream kernel might deal with that issue

hardware fails to recognize an ext3 boot partition. As such, booting
with the new update kernel fails.
This is a critical bug.
