this started happening to me about the time I upgraded to jaunty beta.
Prior to that I had been running late alpha-6 on the affected machine
without seeing this problem.

the comment I replied to indicated this was a dupe of "277693" however
that's THIS defect...
Once I was pointed to gconf to check the setting that was indeed the
problem and xchat-gnome works once that setting is changed. Not sure
what the resolution of this bug is, or if further data is needed fo

Aha! transparency was indeed set to 0.5, and then initially when I set
it to 0 it got set to some massively negative value. Setting zero again
let the app start, and I was able to turn transparency off.

in my case, but it could well be. The entry does not appear to exist in
~/.xchat2/xchat.conf, and since the app can't start, I have no way of

setting is supposed to be, it's definitely not set.
I did find the UI setting for that for the non-gnome xchat, and the
setting works, does not cause the app to terminate in that case.

It's actually an intel card, now that I look. I think the real issue is
