I realize I'm tilting at windmills here, but the need is being able to
build statically linked binaries. I don't see the harm in providing that
option for those who need it. What's next, patch out the -static flag
from gcc?

I am happy to report that this problem is no longer present as of
intrepid server alpha 5 (have not tried the earlier alphas). I may add
that hardy desktop x64 worked as well so this was definitely a desktop
vs server thing.

I have solved the problem temporarily by installing the generic
kernel, so there is definitely something about the server image that
doesn't play with my hardware.

I'm experiencing behaviour similar to that in bug #223647: the system
boots and runs unusably slow. Unfortunatly, upgrading the BIOS did not
help and neither did downgrading to gutsy server.
