te: that I have some icons that start programs and for that to happen
I did have to follow one of the treads to get it working. For me the
desktop is really a pain in the bud and not an improvement compared to
18.04.

I have been able to trigger this bug as part of purging out various
GNOME data/similar packages. I suspect the greeter is trying to open a
file that isn't there now, or similar.
