Public bug reported:
X-fi PCI-e card seems to be the issue. Hasn't worked since, I believe,
kernel 3.8.x - sound failed on Ubuntu 14.10 and 15.04.
Last working config was using 14.04 on, I believe, kernel 3.8.x -
although Google tells me 14.04.2 used kernel 3.16 ... I vaguely recall
rolling back
In the past two weeks my PC has powered itself off several times -
usually over night but twice while I was using it. I initially suspected
VirtualBox as each time it happened to me I had a USB device attached to
the guest system.
The overnight shutdowns didn't have VirtualBox open though - only

PulseAudio/ALSA produced the same horrible white noise for me - it did
work once after dual booting into Windows7 and getting the card working
in Windows, rebooting into Linux produced a working soundcard until my
next cold boot.
I ended up getting the sound working with the OSS4 drivers from
Fresh install of 9.10 AMD64 - Ubuntu recognises the card and shows the sound
card in the Sound Preferences Control Panel as:
[SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio] CA0110-IBG but doesn't work.
