I've installed 2.6.27-2-generic and rebooted and it successfully booted. I'm doing a full upgrade to Intrepid at the moment, hopefully that will fix all of the oddities going on with my system, but at least I know I can take the LiveCD and reload the computer from scratch. yea team! Thanks Rob -
