I concur. Since Ubuntu 13.04, I have seen quick lockups with both the
nouveau and nVidia drivers in all the Ubuntu and derivative variants I
have tried (ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, Mint, Mint KDE, etc). My original
problem occurred when I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.10 to 13.04. Since then,

I'm using audio CDs bought from a shop (remember them?) that are
'pressed' in a factory, not burned, so I don't see how Brasero can be
the culprit.

Bugs,
Dear Bryce,
Thank you for your email.
The bug us still an issue (I am now using 9.10) although it is somewhat
different behaviour than when I first reported it. Note it only occurs
upon power-up or reboot, so I tend to leave my PC on standby each time
so the display is guaranteed and this is m
My kernel (Kubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-14-generic) appears to already be
treating it as UDMA/33. From /var/log/syslog:

The same problem is still present in Kubuntu 9.04 (kernel

Public bug reported:
I have just installed 8.10 on a new machine that has a Intel 3100
graphics and Samsung 205BW monitor (lspci attached). Sometimes I can
get to login screen and the graphics are perfect, but most of the time
the screen just blanks out. I can still login 'in the dark' because I
I'm sorry, please ignore my previous posting. I accidentally did that
(partially) on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.
On Kubuntu 8.10 (kernel 2.6.27.11) I get the following:

/var/log/syslog says:

end_request: I/O error, dev sr1, sector 0
Blank CD: reads OK, adds 'blank CD' icon to desktop
Data CD (CD-ROM): reads OK
Music CD: broken, as above

I can confirm this with Kubuntu 8.10 (kernel 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP).
When I insert an audio CD, I get the following errors appearing in
/var/log/syslog:
kernel: [ 4303.501495] end_request: I/O error, dev sr1, sector 0
kernel: [ 4303.501510] Buffer I/O error on device sr1, logical block 0

Changing the path in 'Configure Amarok..." did the trick for me too. It
was /dev/cdrom but should have been /dev/scd1 (which I found by right-
clicking on the CD's desktop icon then selecting 'properties'). Never
had to do this for kaffeine or for the Ubuntu player (whatever it is -
Gnome Player?).

After applying the patch over a week ago now, my printer has been
working well, without random stoppages halfway through pages. So, as
I applied the patch 2 days ago and it seems to work so far - no half
pages and no printer stopped/disabled yet. Can't be absolutely certain
since the initial problem is an intermittent one. But I'll watch it over
the next week or so and see how it goes.

Printing fails in Ubuntu, works in Kubun
Following a recent update to CUPS, it has now reverted to its old only-
semi-broken behaviour of stopping the printer for no apparent reason
(sometimes part-way through a page), but at least marking it as such and
allowing me to start/'enable' it again.

I have an HP3030 MFD laser printer (attached via USB) which used to

via Kubuntu Gutsy, but printing fails mid-page (if it prints at all) on
Ubuntu Gutsy.

P.s. (sorry) running prboom with -nosound, it works fine (well, no
sound, of course), so it definitely appears to be a sound problem.

I can confirm this. X hangs as soon as the opening level starts. I can
switch to a text console and 'kill -9 ', but switching back,
X is in 640x480 resolution (if I'm lucky?). Didn't run it with
'-nofullscreen' (shouldn't have to).
This might be a dupe of Bug #101936, but without the sigsegv. Then
Same for me. I can make the screen saver run in 'Test' when
selecting/configuring screen savers (so I know the screen savers
themselves are installed OK and will run OK), but it won't start on its
own after the specified time. Only broken for Kubuntu (KDE) Gutsy, works
OK for Ubuntu (Gnome) Gutsy -
I had this problem until I switched to the NVidia video driver. Then it
works better than ever - much faster startup than on Edgy or Feisty.
So maybe it's some kind of driver incompatibility.

I see there has been no progress on this, apparently, since June.
Brilliant.
With the imminent release of Gutsy Gibbon, perhaps it doesn't matter.
Can anyone confirm whether this bug will also be present in Gutsy's
kernel, or has it been fixed there?
