Changing the path in 'Configure Amarok..." did the trick for me too. It was /dev/cdrom but should have been /dev/scd1 (which I found by right- clicking on the CD's desktop icon then selecting 'properties'). Never had to do this for kaffeine or for the Ubuntu player (whatever it is - Gnome Player?).
