I can confirm this problem, and also that the debug option causes a
Segmentation Fault.
Let me know if you need anything else. I'm posting my info here instead of
creating a new bug report.

I can confirm that this problem happens only when Visual Effects are
enabled (at any level). So I just turn off Visual Effects in
System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects->*None. Then I just
turn them back on when I'm done.
Nifty program, especially cool that there's a GPL version of the
Public bug reported:
