I have the opposite problem. My brother had been using Programmer's
Dvorak on my system. I did an update, and now lightdm is stuck in
Dvorak -- I can't go back to Qwerty because it doesn't show up in the
language list at the top of the screen. However, for other accounts, it
uses Qwerty and Dvor

with Ubuntu preinstalled. Similar chipset (Intel GM965 aka X3100), same
xf86-video-intel driver. I tried installing ArchLinux on the laptop and
had the same problem when using the "intel" driver in xorg.conf. "vesa"
works fine
