Excuse me for being ignorant here - Why not just allow Empathy to
actually start on login like Liam, James, cldx and many others already
suggested?

This affects me to - I'm using Lucid. Several others reported
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1437702) that they had this
same problem, but only on lucid.
