Actually I have the same annoying behavior on Debian. Really annoying.
Seems pulseaudio is broken by design if a bug is marked as a feature.

I added the jaunty repositories to mij sources list.
After sudo aptitude update I found no 2.6.28-8 kernel. But I did find a
2.6.28-1-rt kernel. But only two of the usual three parts:
linux-headers-2.6.28-1-rt
linux-headers-2.6.28-1-rt-generic This one is not present
linux-image-2.6.28-

I tested with the live CD form Jaunty and then the laptop starts. However
when I use the lice CD for Ubuntu 8.10 the laptop also starts.

I tested the newer kernel without the boot options and it did not make any
difference.
Coming weekend I will try the Jaunty release. I am presently not at a site
where I can download or burn cd images.
