Completely agree with @grey - it is unacceptable that such a simple
thing will consistently create problems for ALL ubuntu users, many of
which will not be comfortable with entering "sudo apt-get -y autoremove"

I do understand the issue though - each kernel is a separate p

you have left on each partition. if /boot is nearly full, it doesn't

I know this is an old thread, but it seem this problem still exists on Ubuntu
14.04. I recently did an install on an affected computer and I documented the
process so I could make this instruction for the benefit of anyone else having
the same issue:

I have a temporary workaround until this issue is fixed. It seems indeed
that it occurs on encrypted home directories, so the solution is to move
the files away from that. Note that the files you move away from your
encrypted home directory are (obviously) no longer encrypted...
Anyway, this work
I don't think this is fixed. Was getting it with indicator-weather in

Never mind, this can be closed.
I didn't notice that the installer was running. It's a bit weird that the
installer should block installation on the usb stick though, as the installer
is supposed to intall on th har drive.

I got a similar problem when upgrading a computer from kubutu hardy 8.04 to
karmic 9.10 using adept.
During the upgrade it said the flashplugin-non-free package failed in some way.
Now, it wont' install, configure or uninstall:
$ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

Wow, I almost forgot about this now :)
I haven't tried using it since I logged this issue, as it didn't make much

setxkbmap will probably work for you as well then.
An easier workaround for you would be to create a link on the desktop or

This makes it more bearable, but I have to emphasize that this is *not*
