Hi,
Audacity 2.0.5 was released in Debian without ffmpeg support because it has not
been fully ported to the libav9 library. Apparently, noone stepped forward to
do the work so it was necessary to do this to allow the libav 9 transition to
complete. See Debian bug #692809.

So, using unetbootin and installing FreeDOS on a USB stick, I managed to flash
the BIOS and not brick my machine.
Now the output of sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s

I am now running the latest mainline kernel.
Cheese still gives a black screen.

I am sorry that no-one looked into this before now. I hope you managed to get
Gramps installed in the end.
Ubuntu Precise (12.04) is the current Long Term Support version of Ubuntu. Did
you manage to get Gramps working in that version or later?

I am also experiencing this problem, except that when I exit Evolution,
when I re-open it I am forced through the restore/add new account
process again. No accounts ever get added.

I'm back to say it really is a bug, and it's in Gnome. I installed the
Gnome version of 13.04 and the same thing happened. Then I installed
Debian Wheezy Live 7 with Gnome and the same thing happened. The same
versions with other desktops do not have the issue.
