It sounds like tor is already running. What happens if you type 'ps aux
| grep tor'? You could try to run 'dpkg-reconfigure vidalia' to tell
Vidalia to take over the Tor process and not start Tor until you start
Vidalia.

I can't find tor in hardy-proposed and I thought the conflict was the
reason.
'rmadison tor' shows:

Also, the page for the i386-build[1] says that a few binaries are still
