Booting back into 3.2.0-17.27 brings the problem back, yup. After
rebooting to 3.2.0-16.25 again and the problem is not present.

I rebooted with 3.2.0-16.25 and the problem went away. I suspect the bug
is in the kernel, not in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics.

Hi,
As recorded in Launchpad I have filed bug 517965 with Debian
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=517965
Given that it's just a version bump, there is no work to send.

For what it's worth, I get crashes every time I remove the e1000 driver,
even without X running at all. I do have a radeon graphics card, too.

My 2c is that this behaviour contradicts the behaviour of all other
daemon type packages which are installed.
By default, a daemon is enabled when you install it in Ubuntu, and
avahi-daemon now breaks that "rule".
Consistency is a good thing.
