I had run gnome-shell from the terminal to try it out for the first
time, and after running it for 20min or so I wanted to get back to my
normal gnome environment. I couldn't find a way to do that in the GUI,
so I pressed ctrl-c in the terminal. It switched beautifully back to my

After reformatting and reinstalling without home directory encryption,
the problem went away, and never came back.
Weird.

I did a fresh install of juanty and then upgraded to karmic on my Acer
Aspire 1410, and compiz worked fine.
Today I did a fresh install of Karmic in order to have the performance
benefits of ext4, and now compiz won't work and as a result the

So I reinstalled again, this time without encrypted home directory, and
the problem went away. Updating now, I'll close this bug if it doesn't
come back.
