Here's how I solved this problem:
Boot the 11.04 Live CD.
Switch to a terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F1.
Follow these instructions to mount your HD and get all the necessary
/dev entries in a chroot enviornment:

After upgrading to 11.04 today the mouse and keyboard no longer work.
At the login screen, I am unable to do anything: Holding SHIFT or ESC
during boot does not bring up the GRUB menu; Ctrl-Alt-Fn does not switch

always) fail to initialize if a webcam with a USB mic is plugged in.
This behavior was never observed with 10.04 and is new since upgrading
to 10.10.

I don't remember when exactly, but some kernel update solved that
problem (the laptop is now running 2.6.31-20-generic). I haven't had a
failed resume in a long time.

I tried the Hardy kernel linux-image-2.6.24-1-server and it didn't help.
Unfortunately, since I was unable to get a stable configuration working,
the IT department have taken the machine away so I no longer have access
to it.

- Unplugged discs from the motherboard and plugged them into the Adaptec
controller
- Installed a different NIC (Intel 82541PI Gigabit), shutting off the one on
the motherboard
- Switched all partitions from xfs to ext3

In the screenshot you see there is no menu (File, Edit, etc...) nor
menu bar (icons that represent open file, save file, etc).
The menu does appear very briefly while Emacs is booting up.

Any attempts to suspend with an up-to-date Edgy install on this laptop
result in the screen just locking. When I unlock with my password, a
pop-up informs me that suspend failed.
So, at least I don't need to reboot.

The latest kernel did not help; in fact, it seems to have made things
slightly worse... now the nm-applet won't let me configure wireless at
all (though command-line tools like ifup, iwconfig, etc. still seem to
not work in the same way as before... hope you unserstand what I mean).
