Occurred during update. That's all I know. Linux newbie with no

coreutils is installed, according to Software Center. The list of
programs in the info window shows ...shred, shuf, sleep, stat,
stdbuf,... but no sort. If I use Software Center to remove, it looks
like I need to remove a bunch of other stuff such as dpkg, hplip, etc.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. I tried to change my password for the system.
I tried to input my current p/w and I did that. However, when I changed
my mind to not change the p/w, I inputted the same p/w and confirmed it.
This caused my system to crash.

I am trying to install Ubuntu v6.10 from the desktopPC cd. I have a
Dell Inspiron 1100. It booted into live mode, and I selected to install
it. It went through the entire process of reformatting my hard drive
and installing the new file
