I just pulled linux-image-2.6.30-9-generic from the karmic repositories
(without upgrading anything else), the problem persists there.
Coincidentally (?), the left mouse button of my Logitech USB mouse
stopped working with that kernel.

I just installed the following packages:
libmono-cairo1.0-cil
libmono-cairo2.0-cil
libgdbm3
mono-mjs
mono-tools-devel
mono-debugger
mono-runtime

libmono2.0-cil
Which of the libraries fixed the problem I do not know, but it works now.
That probably means that one of Muine's

From apt-cache show 915resolution:
The 915resolution package becomes obsolete with the newer xorg,
especially if you have the xserver-xorg-video-intel package installed.
Newer xorg brings modesetting support by default.

When xserver-xorg-video-intel is installed the X server still appears to start
(the screen goes black and I can hear the startup sound), but no output is
produced on the screen.
I should probably mention that I am using DVI output (via ADD2 card), so
possibly the driver incorrectly selects VGA
I can confirm that this also happens when video output is produced.

*reduced* the screen resolution even further (to 640x680).

Additional notes:
- The problem also happens when compiz is not used.
- The i810 driver was not automatically recognized, I added it to
xorg.conf manually. By default, the generic vesa driver was used.
- As can be seen in the Xorg.0.log, the driver fell back to 1600x1200
though 1920x1200 is
I'm in heaven. It works, my eyes thank whoever fixed it.
