Had the exact same problem on a MSI S420 laptop, after installing alsa 2.6.35
through the synaptic package manager: No grub, had to load from a live cd.
Thats why I added that it affected my system. do not know much abut bug
reprorts sorry if I screw things up..

Ok I did that and I didn't get any grub on startup!!! My worst nightmare, since
the MSI bios cannot load from flashdrives and my cddrive is brken. I managed to
reboot from a live cd while pinching the drive together.
I guess this GRUB is unrelated though?
