Thank-you Since there were 10 or so updates to OO at the time my machine tried to update, I ended up keeping system monitor open and killing soffice.bin every time the next patch was presented. It seemed that open office respawned the dang thing each time. A pain, but it worked Regards Saverio

Install and use "System Monitor". You will find it in System -->Administration of the Menu Bar. This program will show a real time view of processes running.
