Found a possible solution to this on a related webpage. Open a command
line and type
mimeopen -d some .pdf document on your system
Choose evince or your preferred pdf viewer as the default. Should reset
the defaults, but recommend closing kicad and restarting. This worked
for me on Ubuntu
