Same problem here. Running Hardy Alpha 5, x86_64 on Intel 946GZ chipset,
monitor is connected thru KVM switch, so it DDC won't work...

Could it be that you have a motherboard based on SiS662 chipset? (Like

Xorg driver has a known problem with this chipset. It will show noise
(vertical lines, snow, etc.) then working in high resolution modes (like
