Experienced the same problem when upgrading from 15.10. Had to do apt-
get install -f systemd to force the upgrade from 225-1ubuntu9.1 to
229-4ubuntu4 (of systemd and systemd-sysv).

On my system, it hung on the post-start hook's first line, where the
hook waits for the appearance of /var/run/cups/cups.sock. This was
caused by me commenting out the Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock line in

from proposed. No error in log, yet only a black screen.

I can confirm this on a Dell Studio 1555. I have tried with acpi=force
noapic (to fix Karmic's troubles with this laptop) just noapic and
neither of those.
Everything else ACPI-related (fans, thermal sensors, backlight keys)
