I encountered this issue with Ubuntu 10.04 and ASRock K8SLI-eSATA2 motherboard.

I tried post #85's instructions, but it causes more problems than it
solves...

LOL. Never mind! Workaround (for my case) is found on Bug #292142
(1) Create new file = sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/options
(2) Add this = options pata_ali atapi_dma=1
(3) Edit this = sudo nano /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
(4) Add this = pata_ali atapi_dma=1
(5) Run this = sudo update-initramfs -u
Have the same issue.
Upgraded from Xubuntu 8.04 LTS = Then 8.10 = Then 9.04
Tried the workarounds in the original bug description...It got worse.
From 16 instances to 27 instances of xfdesktop!

So gnome-screensaver uses HAL now instead of thinkpad-acpi.
That in turn, calls for 0x02:screenlock. In thinkpad-acpi, this was
blank screen.
...I just tried Debian Lenny 5.0.1 CD 1 install (Gnome desktop), and
it does the same thing, as we have experienced.
