Is there any progress getting emerald back into the repository? I've
also missed for quite some time now and I really would appreciate
getting my GUI normailzed after upgrading to 12.04 - I really do not
like the bulky Unity GUI.

I can confirm this issue on Gusty 2.6.22-14-generic with a wireless connection.
Just upgraded to Gusty from Feisty. A snip from /var/log/messages:

I can confirm this bug.
I just upgraded to Feisty yesterday (23/4 - 07) and now the network is off per
default.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Boot up computer.
2. Login.
3. Notice that network is off.
